A novel food product dreamed up by Roald Dahl in his classic book, Charlie & the chocolate factory, has been brought to life by one of Dorset’s leading event caterers, Tony Beales.

Working with a leading local food technology laboratory, Mr Beales and his team of chefs have managed to create a flavour time-delay pill which, upon chewing, becomes a gum that slowly releases three distinctly different flavours in succession. For the trial product, the team have stuck to their south coast roots and created a delicious medley of New Forest asparagus soup; a Dorset spring lamb main course – complete with gratin potatoes; and finally finished with a New Forest Eton Mess.

Using a cold cyclic pressure technique, the flavours and aromas from each dish are captured at a molecular level through “steam catching” technology. This residue is then dry-pressed into a chewable capsule-style pill.

Speaking about his creation, Mr Beales said: “I am immensely proud of my team. We’ve taken this conceptual idea from a classic scene featuring Willy Wonka and have brought it to life. The pill may take some getting used to, but you can be guaranteed of a delicious tasting meal, with less than 50 calories – a massive coincidental benefit! We’ll be trialling these at a selection of events through the summer and will seek customer feedback to help us determine the next series of flavours to be adopted.”

The pill itself is hard to swallow, so should instead be discarded after the dessert course. Don’t worry – there is no risk of a Violet Beauregarde moment!” he continued.
